Following the great success of the first two Duesseldorf Photo Weekends 2012 and 2013, this event will now take place again for the third time from January 31 to February 2 2014. Numerous galleries, museums and institutions from the Duesseldorf art and photography scene will open their doors for an entire weekend and show exhibitions and hold events on the theme of photography.


The launch of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2014 will be the opening on Thursday evening (30.1.2014) in the NRW Forum with the exhibition under the theme “Heimat” (The Fatherland) from the DZ Bank Frankfurt, which will be showing extracts from its collection. The DZ bank owns one of the most important collections of photography in Germany. A small catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

In the north wing of the NRW Forum the exhibition of the U.S. master photographer Duane Michals (born 1932) will be opened at the same time. Michals became especially renowned for his sequence photography, which he completes with handwritten texts. The exhibition shows photographs since the late 50s and finishes with his newest works the so called Tintypes. These are old photographic plates which Michals has painted over. Parallel to the exhibition a new film will be shown about Michals: “The Man Who Invented Himself”, directed by Camille Guichard (approx. 100 min).

Amongst the participating museums is the Museum Kunstpalast which will show works by Candida Höfer. Neighbouring E.ON will show a curated exhibition under the title “With the Eyes of Duesseldorf Galleries”, where ten young photographers will be shown.


Up until now more than 14 galleries with photographic exhibitions and institutions have contacted Clara Sels, the organiser of the event. The Polish Institute are dedicating an retrospective to the classical Polish photographer Jerzy Lewczynski under the title of “The Memory of the Picture”. In a solo exhibition the collection Philara Werke will show work of the artist Natalie Czech. The Malkasten Duesseldorf present, under the title “ANTIFOTO”, the work of the British partnership MacDonaldStrand.


The exhibition programme will be complemented by a series of events. On Friday January 31 at 22:00 these will kick off with a party with the legendary British DJ Rusty Egan. The British photographer Kevin Cummins will show his work on the upper floor of the NRW Forum. On Saturday February 1 the Portfolio Review will take place from 12:00-20:00 in the NRW Forum where national and international photographic magazines may be viewed in the Magazine Salon.

Nach den großen Erfolgen der ersten beiden Duesseldorf Photo Weekends 2012 und 2013 findet die Veranstaltung nun zum dritten Mal statt. Zahlreiche Galerien, Museen und Institutionen aus der Düsseldorfer Kunst- und Fotografie-Szene öffnen ein Wochenende lang ihre Türen und zeigen Ausstellungen und organisieren Veranstaltungen zum Thema Fotografie.

Den Auftakt zum Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2014 macht die Eröffnung am Donnerstagabend (30. Januar 2014) im NRW Forum. Die DZ Bank mit Sitz in Frankfurt hat eine der bedeutendsten fotografischen Sammlungen in Deutschland und zeigt Teile daraus unter dem Titel "Heimat". Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog.

Im rechten Flügel des ehemaligen NRW Forums wird zeitgleich die Ausstellung des amerikanischen Meisterfotografen Duane Michals (geb. 1932) eröffnet. Besonders bekannt geworden ist Michals durch seine Fotosequenzen, die er mit handgeschriebenen Texten ergänzt. Die Ausstellung zeigt Fotografien seit den späten 1950er Jahren und schließt ab mit seinen neuesten Werken, den sogenannten Tintypes. Hierbei handelt es sich um alte Fotoplatten, die Michals übermalt hat und die allesamt Unikate sind.

Parallel zur Ausstellung wird findet die Deutschlandpremiere des Filmes Duane Michals: The Man Who Invented Himself: Directed by Camille Guichard (ca. 100 min) am Samstag, den 1. Februar um 15:00 Uhr im NRW-Forum Düsseldorf statt. Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung stehen Duane Michals und Camille Guichard dem Publikum für ein Gespräch zur Verfügung.

Zu den teilnehmenden Museen gehört auch die Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, die Werke von Candida Höfer zeigt. E.ON in der Nachbarschaft präsentiert eine kuratierte Ausstellung unter dem Titel: Mit den Augen Düsseldorfer Galerien. Gezeigt werden hier zehn junge künstlerische Fotopositionen.

Es nehmen mehr als 24 Galerien und Institutionen am Düsseldorf Photo Weekend 2014 teil. Das Polnische Institut widmet dem 1924 geborenen Klassiker der polnischen Fotografie Jerzy Lewczynski eine Retrospektive unter dem Titel Das Gedächtnis des Bildes. In einer Einzelausstellung zeigt die Sammlung Philara Werke der Künstlerin Natalie Czech. Der Malkasten Düsseldorf präsentiert unter dem Titel ANT!FOTO #5 die Fotografen Clare Strand und Gordon MacDonald.

Ergänzt wird das Ausstellungsprogramm durch eine Reihe von Veranstaltungen. Am Freitag, dem 31. Januar 2014, startet um 22.00 Uhr im NRW Forum eine Party mit dem legendären britischen DJ Rusty Egan. Am Samstag, dem 1. Februar 2014, findet das Portfolio Review von 12.00 - 20.00 Uhr im NRW Forum statt. Zeitgleich können im Magazin-Salon nationale und internationale Fotomagazine eingesehen werden.
