Three-day workshop with renowned French photographer Lise Sarfati

10-12 October 2013

The students will have a rare opportunity to show their work to a well-known expert in photography. The master will share her ideas on the process of creation of the “body” of work while focusing on the “soul” of photographic project. She will speak on the theme of series and the editing process. The workshop will be dedicated to the creation of photographic series and photographic books. The main focus will be on making the project successful. During the workshop Lise Sarfati will also show her recent projects to the students and discuss with them her method of work, from choosing the theme to the realization of photographic project. The students will be shown the series The New Life and SHE and will have a chance to have the photographer's books signed by the author.

The workshop is aimed at photography students or those working in the area of photography, journalism, publishing, design, multimedia or art. The workshop will result in a layout project of each student's book.

Workshop will take three days from 10.00 to 18.00, with a lunch break.

At the end of the workshop the student's works will be presented at ROSPHOTO in the form of a video-projection. Each participant will receive a certificate.

Lise Sarfati

French-born Lise Sarfati has lived and worked in the United States since 2003. She has produced six important series of photographs in America, each followed by major exhibitions. They include The New Life (2003),Published by Twin Palms in 2005, 
 Austin, Texas (2008), commission work published by Magnum Photos, She (2005-2009), Immaculate (2006-2007), Sloane (2009), and On Hollywood (2010).

Earlier photographic work by Lise Sarfati dates back to 1989-1999 when she visited Russia several times.

In 2001-2011 Sarfati was member of Magnum Photos.

Sarfati's works are in the collections of San-Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), National Library of France in Paris (BNF), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Brooklyn Museum in New York, House of European Photography in Paris (MEP), Domus Atrium in Salamanka, Spain, Museum of Nicephore Niepce in Chalon-sur-Saône , France, Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and Rose Gallery in Los Angeles.

The recent monograph of series SHE published by Twin Palms Publisher in 2012 with an essay by Quentin Bajac, Chief Curator of Photography at MoMA, New York, was on the list of ten finalists for the PhotoBook of the Year award organized by Aperture Foundation and Paris Photo 2012.

In November 2014 a retrospective of Lise Sarfati's work is planned at te National Library of France (BNF) in Paris.

REQUIREMENTS

The participants are expected to arrive with a portfolio of about 20 printed, preferably inkjet photographs, color or b&w, with an idea they wish to develop during the workshop and preliminary layout of the book which will be worked upon and improved during the workshop. Participants are expected to have a good level of photographic aptitude and a serious intention to create a photography book. Participants are to be equipped with their own computers.

Every student is to have one realistic idea of a project to be worked upon during the workshop. A portfolio review is to be held before the start of workshop, to give students an idea of the master's requirements.

Applicants should submit maximum 10 images in JPEG, no larger than 200 KB each, accompanied by a short text, a filled-in application form and description of their approach in photography.

This workshop is not about learning technical skills but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Workshop will be held in English/Russian and the class will be assigned an assistant who will facilitate the workshop and help students when it comes to technical or logistical issues. In addition what is sure to be a fruitful dynamic in class, there will also be ample informal time for sharing and cross-pollination of ideas with teacher and students.

TUITION

Tuition fee is 7000 Russian Rubles for 3 days.

All fees must be paid within 7 days of acceptance of your application.

Please note:

ROSPHOTO reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 7 participants. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 2 weeks advance notice and students will receive a full refund.

If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, it must be confirmed in writing. ROSPHOTO will reimburse all registration costs if the participant informs ROSPHOTO of cancellation at least 2 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, ROSPHOTO will charge 50% of the cost if canceled between 4 and 13 days before the workshop commences, or 100% of the cost if canceled less than 3 days before the workshop commences.

ROSPHOTO is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case the workshop is canceled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.

Applications are received until October 5.

You will be contacted shortly after we have received your applications. All applications received after October 5th will be reviewed, space permitting.

Those who do not have the chance to participate but are interested to find out about Lise Sarfati's work from the author herself, are welcome to the video presentation of the participants' works at ROSPHOTO on 12 October at 18.30.
