Born in 1952, Simone Kappeler began taking photographs at the age of 11 year-old. After studying German literature and art history, she attended the School of Design Zurich in photography major.
In 1981, she began a four-month journey through the U.S. driving an old Gran Torino. During her road trip, she took black and white and color pictures with toy cameras like a Diana. With these images, rediscovered only in 2010, we dive into a world of sensations, a personal representation of what the United States were thirty years ago, long before the Bush era and the invention of the internet and mobile phones. The serendipity and imperfections associated with the use of these cameras give a special quality to her photographs and offer images closer to intimate reminiscences than to a documentary. The vibrant light and colors in some of her photographs remind us of the world of Robert Frank and William Eggleston. Simone Kappeler introduces in these images, yet very personal, subtle references to the history of photography.

The photographer owns dozens of different cameras like Hasselblad, Leica, Diana, Brownie or Polaroid and explored their technical specifications. She also uses a wide selection of films no longer produced and printed with the utmost care on photographic papers, also about to disappear.

Simone Kappeler - Through America
08.10 – 02.11.2013
