California

Exhibition: 24 August – 27 September, 2013
Opening: 23 August, 2013, 7pm

The german portrait and reportage photographer Marcus Felix Hofschulz presents between the 24th of august and 27th of september 2013 his photo series "California" at Gallery STP in Greifswald, Germany.

Hofschulz already achieved with his expressive and deeply emotional colored “California“-Shots an extremely positive response at the last Photokina Fair in his hometown Cologne. The entire project was supported by Leica and the fine art paper producer Hahnemühle.

In 2001 Marcus Felix Hofschulz turned his passion into a profession. Initially specialized in portraits, fashion and stills, mainly photographed in the studio with a focus on black and white, he put his focus in the following years more and more on landscape photography and colors got more and more importance for him.

In 2008 he was semi-finalist at the Hasselblad Masters Awards. In 2006 and 2008 he was represented at Photokina with his series "60 Eyes" and "Faces To Read” - titles that already name the sensual expression of his work.

Hofschulz made his name within his works in the photo industry - not at least because of his "California" Shots. "I wanted to show California through my eyes and on a different way”, says the 52 years old German: “The Golden State as an exciting confronation between desert, sea and cities.“

For Hofschulz with his California project a life-long dream became true. He travelled 4500 kilometer for the series together with the Digital Artist "Kori" in the car along the west coast of the famous Pacific Coast Highway # 1. "We drove the California Highway down from San Francisco to L.A. accompanied bythese fantastic clouds. Then to San Diego, to Joshua Tree National Park, Yosemite National Park and finally back to San Francisco," he explains.

The pictures of his trip to California were edited by Kori, an Hamburg based digital artist. Inspired by the moisty coasts of the Pacific and the extremely blue sky the two artists developed a new individual color scheme for the series: "Intense Reduced Color" was born. The faraway blue tones create a headstrong and emotional coloring. Appearing surreal itnvelopeds the viewer in an exciting uncertainty. A forboding collides with the flawless beauty of the landscape. A new way of seeing is inevitably possible. Titles such as "Morning Mood on Pebble Beach" or "Lone Cypress" underline the emotional nature of the images and remind the historical romanticism of the 19th Century. So what would be more appropriate to show this series than in Greifswald, the birthplace of the famous german painter Caspar David Friedrich.

Jahrhunderts. Was wäre also passender, als diese Serie in Greifswald, der Geburtsstadt von Caspar David Friedrich zu zeigen.
