161 lots of modern and contemporary photography will be auctioned on Wednesday, May 29 at Villa Grisebach in Berlin. Martin Munkácsi’s 1932 “Brasilien erstickt im Kaffee” (Brasil, choked with coffee) (€ 15,000/20,000), one of three known vintage prints, belongs to the Hungarian’s early reportage work created before he emigrated to the United States in 1934 where his ascent to legendary fashion photographer began. Another auction highlight is Hugo Erfurth’s striking portrait of Otto Dix, a rare oil pigment print of 1920, presenting the young painter in stern profile (€ 8,000/10,000). In circa 1929 in Paris Andre Kertész took the photograph of Sergei Eisenstein flashing a diabolic smile. At the time of the shoot the Russian film director had already earned international acclaim for his famous movies “Battleship Potemkin” and “October” (€ 10,000/15,000). Two vintages or early gelatin silver prints by Constantin Brancusi are shots of a model, lost today, for the famous “Porte du baiser” (1935-1938), a seminal work by the Romanian sculptor (€ 6,000/8,000 each).


From the estate of Aenne Biermann, one of the most innovative women photographers of the 1920s, 12 vintages will be sold. From portraits and landscapes to “New Objectivity” form studies and experimental photography the prints span the entire spectrum of an artist who died young (€ 800/1,200 to € 2,000/3,000). Further highlights in the modern photography selection include two solarizations by Erwin Blumenfeld, “Solarized Nude” (€ 10,000/12,000) and “Solarized Portrait” (€ 9,000/11,000), and works by Diane Arbus, Ilse Bing, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andreas Feininger, Saul Leiter, Albert Renger-Patzsch, August Sander, Josef Sudek, Francesca Woodman, and others.


Leading the contemporary photography selection are Hiroshi Sugimoto’s meditative composition “Baltic Sea, Rügen” from the series “Seascapes” (€12,000/15,000) and Dieter Appelt’s sequence “Der Fleck auf dem Spiegel, den der Atemhauch schafft” as a 13-part, unique work (€ 12,000/15,000). Anton Corbijn with his electrifying portrait of Miles Davis (€ 5,000/7,000) and Robert Mapplethorpe with “Tulips” (€ 7,000/9,000) are represented as are Nobuyoshi Araki, Thomas Florschuetz, Candida Höfer, Peter Lindbergh, Shirin Neshat, Martin Parr, Andres Serrano, Thomas Struth, and others.

161 Losnummern Klassischer und Zeitgenössischer Photographie werden am Mittwoch, den 29. Mai bei Villa Grisebach in Berlin versteigert. Martin Munkácsis “Brasilien erstickt im Kaffee” von 1932 (€ 15.000/20.000), einer von drei bekannten Vintage-Abzügen, gehört zu den ersten großen Reportagen des Ungarn, bevor dieser 1934 in die USA emigrierte, wo sein Aufstieg zum legendären Modephotographen begann. Ein weiteres Highlight der Auktion ist Hugo Erfurths eindringliches Portrait von Otto Dix, ein seltener Ölpigmentdruck von 1920, der den jungen Maler in strenger Profilansicht zeigt (€ 8.000/10.000). Um 1929 photographierte Andre Kertész in Paris den russischen Filmregisseur Sergei Eisenstein mit diabolischem Lächeln, für seine berühmten Filme “Panzerkreuzer Potemkin” und “Oktober” war dieser zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme bereits international bekannt (€ 10.000/15.000). Zwei Vintages bzw. frühe Silbergelatineabzüge von Constantin Brancusi zeigen ein heute verschollenes Modell der berühmten „Porte du baiser“ (1935-1938), ein Hauptwerk des rumänischen Bildhauers (je € 6.000/8.000).

Aus dem Nachlaß von Aenne Biermann, einer der innovativsten Photographinnen der 1920er Jahre, werden 12 Vintages versteigert, die die ganze Bandbreite der jung verstorbenen Künstlerin, von Portrait- und Landschaftsdarstellungen über die Gestaltungsformen der „Neuen Sachlichkeit“ bis hin zur experimentellen Photographie aufzeigen (€ 800/1.200 bis € 2.000/3.000). Weiterhin kommen im Bereich der Klassischen Photographie zwei Solarisationen von Erwin Blumenfeld zur Auktion: „Solarized Nude“ (€ 10.000/12.000) und „Solarized Portrait“ (€ 9.000/11.000) sowie Arbeiten von Diane Arbus, Ilse Bing, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andreas Feininger, Saul Leiter, Albert Renger-Patzsch, August Sander, Josef Sudek, Francesca Woodman u.a.
