IRVING PENN: ETHNOS

Bernheimer Fine Art Photography is proud to present an exhibition of photographs by Irving Penn, his first at the Munich gallery, from 2 December 2011 to 28 January 2012.

American photographer Irving Penn (1917 – 2009) is widely known for his fashion, portrait, and still life images, but he also pursued numerous opportunities to photograph the indigenous people of Africa, Latin America and Melanesia. It is the latter that will be shown.

In 1948 Penn went to Cuzco, a small town in the centre of the Peruvian Andes, to photograph its inhabitants. Photographing with northern light, Penn posed his sitters in manners that emphasized the texture and form of their garments and presented them with honesty through the strength of their expressions. Despite the cultural gulf that separated photographer and subject, Penn’s portraits stand as sensitive and intimate records.

In the years following his work in Cuzco, Penn continued to travel the globe with the curiosity of an anthropologist and the eye of an artist. He would design and build a portable studio for his travel into isolated areas. In 1967, he landed in Dahomey, a region now part of Benin. With his tent studio in tow, Penn installed his set throughout the country, documenting the pride and splendour of its many tribes. Two years later, he travelled to Cameroon to photograph the Kirdi, a Sudanese speaking ethnic minority from the north. In the solitude of his portable studio, Penn made visual records of a people imbued with inner peace and spiritual gravity.

During his travels, Penn produced some of his best photographs in 1970 in the highlands of New Guinea. In this mountainous territory, he made majestic portraits of villagers elaborately deco¬rated with a body art unique to the region. A year later, Penn carried out his final trip of this kind to Morocco, a place both familiar and mysterious to him, to photograph the men and often veiled women of the Arabic tribes along the Atlas mountain range.

The power and elegance of these pictures, made into meticulous prints by the artist, reveal the affection Penn had for the spirit and traditions of these individuals and his deep respect for their respective cultures.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a book entitled “IRVING PENN: ETHNOS” designed by Vasilios Zatse, Associate Director of The Irving Penn Foundation, with a foreword by Blanca Bernheimer. 31 images, both in black and white and colour, form this elegant volume.


Penn's photography has been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide. Recent exhibitions include Irving Penn: Small Trades at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (2009-2010) and Irving Penn Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, London (2010).

His work can be found in both private and international museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Morgan Library and Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington,D.C.

Penn has published multiple books of photographs: Moments Preserved (1960); Worlds in a Small Room (1974); Inventive Paris Clothes (1977); Flowers (1980); Issey Miyake (1988); Passage (1991); Still Life (2001); A Notebook at Random (2004); Photographs of Dahomey (2004); as well as 2 books of drawings. Monographs of his work include: Irving Penn (1984); Irving Penn: Master Images (1990); Irving Penn: A Career in Photography (1997); Dancer (2001); Earthly Bodies: Irving Penn's Nudes, 1949-50 (2002); Irving Penn: Platinum Prints (2005); Irving Penn: Small Trades (2009); and Irving Penn Portraits (2010).

Bernheimer Fine Art Photography präsentiert von Dezember 2011 bis Januar 2012 erstmals Arbeiten des Photographen Irving Penn.

Der Amerikaner Irving Penn (1917 – 2009) erlangte weltweit Ruhm als Fashion-, Portrait- und Stilllebenphotograph. Über mehrere Jahrzehnte folgte er jedoch auch immer wieder seinem Wunsch, indigene Volksstämme Afrikas, Lateinamerikas und Malaysias zu portraitieren. Um diese Aufnahmen in den entlegenen Regionen realisieren zu können, entwickelte Penn eine Zeltkonstruktion als Setting, die entsprechend seinem New Yorker Studio, vor neutralem Hintergrund und ohne Ablenkung, die besondere kulturelle Diversität der Dargestellten in poetischer Schönheit betont.
Vor dem neutralen grauen Hintergrund, den Irving Penn auch für seine Modeaufnahmen und Stillleben bevorzugte, verleiht er den Portraits einen immergleichen Rahmen. Das portable Studio ermöglichte ihm, auch an abgelegenen Orten seinen photographischen Stil beizubehalten, und die ihm typische Bildästhetik mit der fremden Schönheit der Modelle in Einklang zu bringen.
Im weichen, diffusen Nordlicht, das er für seine Arbeit so sehr schätzte, nehmen die Figuren ihre zarte Gestalt an. Die Posen, Gesten und Haltungen sind so gewählt, dass Stofflichkeit, Linien und Volumen des Faltenwurfs als erstes ins Auge fallen.

1948 entstand in Cuzco, Lima, der Anfang dieser Bilderserie, die Irving Penn mit der Neugierde eines Anthropologen und der Scharfsinnigkeit eines Künstlers in den kommenden Jahren, auf der Suche nach der ästhetischen Besonderheit ethnischer Gruppen, um die ganze Welt reisen ließ. „Cuzco Children“ gilt heute als Ikone im Œuvre Penns. Keines der in Cuzco entstandenen Bilder ist feinfühliger, stimmungsvoller und bezaubernder als die Studie dieser zwei kleinen Kinder. Bruder und Schwester, beide barfuss mit einem zaghaften, unschuldigen Ausdruck, sind der Kamera zugewandt. Charmant und anrührend, gleichzeitig auch unbeholfen und seltsam befremdlich, stehen sie Hand in Hand, angelehnt an einen Klavierhocker, der ihre kleinen Körper noch kleiner erscheinen lässt. Einer der seltenen Platinum Abzüge wird in der Ausstellung zu sehen sein.

Zu den bekanntesten Bildern seiner Reisen zählen die Photographien, die Irving Penn 1970 in Neu Guinea machte. Mit einem Team der Vogue und seiner Frau Lisa reiste er in das Hochland Neu Guineas, um den kunstvollen Körperkult der dortigen Stämme zu photographieren. Die Bilder der Asaro-Mudmen, Männer die ihre Körper weiß bemalten und ihre Gesichter hinter Masken, die sie aus grauem Schlamm formen, verbergen, zählen bis heute zu den bekanntesten Bildern Irving Penns.

Unter dem Titel ETHNOS gibt die Galerie Bernheimer eine neue Publikation mit teils noch nie gezeigten Photographien heraus. Dieses Buch, das in Zusammenarbeit mit der Irving Penn Foundation erscheint, enthält 31 Abbildungen, die in der Galerie gezeigt und zum Verkauf angeboten werden, sowie ein Vorwort von Blanca Bernheimer.

Die Fotografien von Penn wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen weltweit gezeigt, zuletzt Irving Penn: Small Trades (2009-2010) im J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles und Irving Penn Portraits in der National Portrait Gallery in London (2010).
