Steve McCurry

From March on Flo Peters Gallery will present the photographic work of award-winning american photographer Steve McCurry. On display will be photographs from his 30 years long career. In addition to his works about crisis regions and about the impact of war on the individual he also focuses on subjects about cultural and religious identity. Personal relatedness to a place are revealed in his pictures of Tibet or of the temples of Angkor What in which the human being is always the most important part of the composition.

Steve McCurry was born in 1950 in Philadelphia and studied at the College of Arts and Architecture at Pennsylvania State University. After a two years employment at an american newspaper agency he quitted his job to work as a freelancer. His first aim to travel was India which offered him a wide range of subjects for an intimate photo documentary. It is the waiting and observing attitude of the photographer which reveals the soul of an object in the picture and which fades out the effects of the focusing camera. The calmness in the pictures invites the viewer to rest and to think about what he’s looking at.

From the 1970s on McCurry has been travelled to areas of conflict, among those Afghanistan, Yemen and Iraq. For his personal commitment during the rebel controlled Afghanistan shortly before the russian Invasion he was honoured with the Robert Capa Gold Medal for the best photographic reportage. Veiled in local afghan costume he had crossed the boundary to Pakistan with his film reels sewed into the cloth. This photo material was among the first to document the afghan civil war.

For his photographic work Steve McCurry won a lot of prizes, among those the World Press Photo- and the Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award. His photos were published in the world’s most known magazines like National Geographic and GEO. For the former McCurry provided the cover photo of the so far most successful edition: the portrait of the afghan girl Sharbat Gula in a refugee camp, published in 1985. This picture holds as the most known symbol for the individual fate during the Soviet occupation from 1979 till 1989. It is also an example for the power of a photographic picture which is above the level of a simple commentatorship.

McCurry published several books, amongst others The Unguarded Moment (2009), In the Shadows of Mountains (2007), Looking East (2006), Steve McCurry (2005), The Path to Buddha: A Tibetan Pilgrimage (2003), Sanctuary (2002), South Southeast (2000), Portraits (1999), Monsoon (1988), The Imperial Way (1985).

Am 1. März eröffnet die Flo Peters Gallery eine umfassende Werkschau des preisgekrönten amerikanischen Fotografen Steve McCurry. Gezeigt werden rund 50 Arbeiten aus seiner 30-jährigen Karriere als Fotojournalist, seit 1986 als Mitglied der Agentur MAGNUM. Neben der Dokumentation in Krisenregionen und den Auswirkungen des Krieges auf das Individuum vor allem im Mittleren Osten und in Asien thematisieren McCurrys Bilder kulturelle und religiöse Identitäten und das Verbundensein mit einem Ort.

Steve McCurry, geboren 1950 in Philadelphia, verließ nach einem abgeschlossenen Studium am College of Arts and Architecture an der Pennsylvania State University sowie zwei Jahren Arbeit als Angestellter bei einer amerikanischen Zeitung die USA, um als Freiberufler zu arbeiten. Sein erstes Ziel, Indien, eröffnete ihm einen Zugang zur distanzlosen Teilnahme am Leben der dortigen Bevölkerung. Es ist die abwartende und ruhende Haltung, so McCurry, die schließlich die Seele eines Motivs nach außen kehrt und das Objektiv der Kamera vergessen lässt. In den Bildern wächst sie zu einer fordernden Ruhe heran, die den Betrachter zum Stillstehen veranlasst.

Seit Ende der 70er Jahre bereiste Steve McCurry zahlreiche konfliktbelastete Gebiete, hierunter Afghanistan, den Jemen und den Irak. Für seinen persönlichen Einsatz im von Rebellen kontrollierten Afghanistan kurz vor der russischen Invasion wurde er mit der Robert Capa Goldmedaille für die beste Fotoreportage ausgezeichnet. In einheimische Gewänder gehüllt, hatte er nach dem Aufenthalt seine in den Stoff genähten Filmrollen außer Landes transportiert und lieferte damit als einer der Ersten Bildmaterial über den dort gärenden Bürgerkrieg.

Für seine photographische Arbeit gewann Steve McCurry zahlreiche Preise, darunter den World Press Photo- und den Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award, und erschien in namhaften Magazinen auf der ganzen Welt. Regelmäßig begleiten seine Arbeiten Artikel in GEO oder dem National Geographic. Dort lieferte McCurry das Titelbild der bisher erfolgreichsten Ausgabe: Die Porträtfotografie des afghanischen Flüchtlingsmädchens Sharbat Gula (Abb. rechts), veröffentlicht im Jahre 1985.

McCurry hat mehrere Bücher publiziert, unter anderem The Unguarded Moment (2009), In the Shadows of Mountains (2007), Looking East (2006), Steve McCurry (2005), The Path to Buddha: A Tibetan Pilgrimage (2003), Sanctuary (2002), South Southeast (2000), Portraits (1999), Monsoon (1988), The Imperial Way (1985). In diesem Frühjahr erscheint bei Phaidon Press Steve McCurry: The Iconic Photographs, eine Limited Edition mit handsigniertem Abzug von McCurry.
