Ray K. Metzker "AutoMagic" Ray K. Metzker has quietly been making extraordinary photographs for the better part of six decades. Today he is recognized as one of the great masters of American photography, a virtuoso who has pursued his chosen medium passionately for fifty years. Born in Milwaukee in 1931, from 1956 to 1959 Metzker attended the Institute of Design in Chicago - a renowned school that had been dubbed the "New Bauhaus" a few years earlier. In 1960 he purchased a Volkswagen and spent over a year crisscrossing Europe. It was during this period that he started to develop his own pictorial vocabulary, investigating - among other things - the relationship between light and shade, often to powerful effect. In 1962, Metzker moved to Philadelphia to assume his first full-time teaching position. That city's narrow streets provided a rich graphic environment for the further exploration and expansion of his feeling for urban rhythms and pulsating beats. Over the next twenty years, composites, multiple exposures, superimposition of negatives, juxtapositions of two images, solarization and other formal means were all part and parcel of his expanded vocabulary. He was committed to discovering the potentials of black-and-white photography during both the shooting and the printing, and he has shown consummate skill in each stage of the photographic process. The numerous solo museum exhibitions which have presented the work of Ray K. Metzker include one held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1967, a 1978 retrospective organized by the International Center of Photography in New York, and in 1984 the large-scale exhibition "Unknown Territory", which was first shown at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and then traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the International Museum of Photography, Rochester, and the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC. Das war die Zeit, in der er begann, seine eigene künstlerische Sprache zu entwickeln und unter anderem die Beziehung zwischen Licht und Schatten zu untersuchen, der er oft effektvoll inszenierte. 1962 nahm Metzker seine erste Vollzeittätigkeit als Lehrender an und zog nach Philadelphia. Die vergleichsweise engen Straßen dieser Großstadt boten ihm ein vielfältiges grafisches Umfeld für weitere Erkundungen und für die Erweiterung seines Sinns für urbane Rhythmen und pulsierende Beats. Im Lauf der nächsten zwanzig Jahre bildeten Kombinationen, Mehrfachbelichtungen, Übereinander-Legen von Negativen, Gegenüberstellungen zweier Bilder, Solarisationen und andere formale Mittel einen wesentlichen Bestandteil seines erweiterten Vokabulars. Zu den zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen Metzkers in Museen gehören die im Museum of Modern Art in New York im Jahr 1967, eine vom International Center of Photography in New York organisierte Retrospektive im Jahr 1978 und die umfangreiche Unknown Territory-Ausstellung, die im Jahr 1984 vom Museum of Fine Arts in Houston über das San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, das Art Institute of Chicago, das Philadelphia Museum of Art, das High Museum of Art, Atlanta, das International Museum of Photography, Rochester, bis zum National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, wanderte. 2008 wurde Ray K.
