International touring exhibition: Borders and Beyond 01 to 21 June, 2004 at Drik Gallery The border is a place of anticipation, longing, and looking to another country – but also a zone of intensified surveillance with its own officials, police presence and military forces. The exhibition Borders and Beyond shows political, historical and social aspects of borders. Ten photographers from Denmark, England, Mexico, Palestine, Russia, South Africa and Switzerland selected for this project direct their gaze at places where different worlds and cultures collide, at borders that signify the end for some and the beginning for others. People and their destinies are at the heart of these photographic essays. Flight across borders as the only means of escaping dire poverty. Borders that can only be crossed with special military permits. Xenophobic slogans on the other side that stamp immigrants as undesirables. Traces of illegal escape routes. These are only a few of the issues addressed in the photo exhibition, "Borders and Beyond". Ten reports by photographers from several countries and continents present deeply moving images of people and borders, of infringement, expulsion and discrimination. The exhibition will open 2 June 2001 in the border regions of Switzerland and will then travel aboard. It calls upon all of us to open our eyes and transcend borders. We invite you to attend the opening ceremony of this thought provoking photography exhibition at Drik Gallery on 1 June 2004, at 5:30pm. Dr. Hameeda Hossain, Founder Member, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest and inaugurate the exhibition. The Exhibition will remain open for all untill 21 June 2004, every day 3pm to 8pm. Date: Tuesday, 25 May 2004 at 5:30pm.
