The Chancellor bungalow in Bonn, official residence of the German Chancellor until 1999, was built by Sep Ruf at the behest of Ludwig Erhard in 1963/1964. Drawing on classical modernism, it’s design meant to signify a cosmopolitan and modern sensibility.

In his newest series of photographs, the Wiesbaden photographer, Dirk Brömmel, considers the architectural conception of this building. He employs the photographs of private and representative events stored e.g. the Federal Archives and the Federal Press Office. Brömmel shows how the cosmopolitan and the modern emerge at the intersection of private and representative spaces.

Just as in his series "Villa Tugendhat", the object in "The Chancellor Bungalow" is to make history visible. The artist uses a sandwich-montage method to incorporate images of the past in his own works. But in contrast to the older series, the imagery of the past takes on more than a just schematic appearance; in the new series it is superimposed upon both contemporary and other past images in ever changing compositions, ones in which the historical photographs are colored and hover before a white mount to gain their own luminosity. The photographic works of Dirk Brömmel, shown here for the first time, offer a current and novel view to the historical import of the building.

Der Kanzlerbungalow in Bonn, Wohnort und Repräsentationsräume der Bundeskanzler bis zum Jahr 1999, wurde im Auftrag von Ludwig Erhard von Sep Ruf 1963/1964 errichtet. Der Entwurf knüpft an die klassische Moderne an und sollte Weltoffenheit und moderne Gesinnung signalisieren.

In seiner neuesten Serie "Kanzlerbungalow" befasst sich der Wiesbadener Fotograf Dirk Brömmel mit der architektonischen Konzeption des Gebäudes. Er greift auf Pressefotografien unter anderen aus dem Bundesarchiv und dem Bundespresseamt zurück, die anlässlich von öffentlichen und privaten Empfängen entstanden sind. Brömmel zeigt wie sich Weltoffenheit und Modernität in der Verschränkung von Privatheit und Repräsentation darstellte.

Wie in seiner früheren Serie "Villa Tugendhat" geht es um Sichtbarmachung von Geschichte. In einem Sandwichmontageverfahren baut der Künstler die Bilder der Vergangenheit in die eigenen Aufnahmen ein. Aber anders als in der älteren Serie lässt er sie nicht nur schemenhaft aufleuchten, sondern überlagert die Aufnahmen von heute und damals in immer neuen Kompositionen, färbt die historischen Fotografien ein, lässt sie vor weißem Passepartout schweben und eine eigene Leuchtkraft gewinnen. Die hier zum ersten Mal ausgestellten neuen fotografischen Arbeiten von Dirk Brömmel zeigen eine aktuelle Sichtweise auf die historische Bedeutung des Gebäudes.
