Peter Puklus. Handbook to the stars
May 12-28 2017
Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography
As part of Photobookfest 2017

As part of Photobookfest’s 2017 exhibition program, the installation of the Hungarian artist Peter Puklus “Handbook to the Stars” made up of 32 copies of his book, will be presented at the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography from May 12th to May 18th. Pulkus attempts to portray his own universe with this handbook. his photographic works relate to each other like galaxies in relative proximity to one another that are bound together by their own gravitational force. The imagery has no sequence or chronology, it functions alongside and through one another, and exist individually even as the images form interconnections and follow their own patterns. The photos do not necessarily fit on a page in this book, which implies that they may appear fragmented, sometimes small, sometimes large, precisely as they coexist in Puklus’ universe of images.

The idea of creating the installation came into Puklus’s mind accidentally – looking at the newly printed books he decided to recreate the “map” hidden in each of them. He connected the fragments of photos scattered across the pages by placing several books next and on top of each other. For the first time the installation was shown in 2013 in the exhibition Space Foam 3h, in Amsterdam. Now it is in a collection at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest and it will be presented in the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography as part of Photobookfest’s 2017 exhibition program with the support of the Hungarian Cultural Center in Moscow.

Peter Puklus is an artist and a photographer. He studied photography at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design inBudapest (MOME) and new media design at the École National Supérieur de Création Industrielle (ENSCI) in Paris. He is about to finish his DLA (Doctor of Liberal Arts) studies in photography at MOME.

The main characterisetic of his creative method lies in absolute freedom from any photographical conventions, shifting naturally between genres, themes and media. Where necessary, he exchanges the static for the moving image, combines positive and negative images, and alternates black and white with colour. He is currently finishing his DLA (Doctor of Liberal Arts) in photography at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest.
