SPECIAL SECTION OF WORKS BY HIROSHI SUGIMOTO

Following the successful sale of Modern Visions: Exceptional Photographs in February, Christie’s presents the sale of Photographs, a panoramic overview of the medium from Post-War to present day, on April 6 in New York.

With over 200 lots, this sale is most notable with a special section celebrating the remarkable breadth of Hiroshi Sugimoto. The section will be comprised of 15 lots that range from Seascapes to Dioramas, Wax Figures, Colors of Shadow, Theatres and Architecture. This is the most comprehensive and exciting grouping of Sugimoto works to ever come up at auction in a single sale. Highlights from the group include oversized prints of Church of the Light, Tadao Ando, 1997 and Diana, Princess of Wales, 1999, (estimate: each at $100,000-150,000).

Additional highlights include a work by Diane Arbus with a rare, signed lifetime print of Boy with a straw hat waiting to march in a pro-war parade, N.Y.C, 1967, (estimate: $200,000-300,000); William Eggleston with a set of ten dye-transfer prints, Southern suite, 1981, (estimate: $80,000-120,000); Irving Penn with Four Guedras, Morocco, 1971, (estimate: $70,000-90,000) and Gisele, New York, April, 1999, (estimate: $70,000- 90,000); Robert Mapplethorpe with a beautiful dye-transfer print, Calla Lily, 1988, (estimate: $60,000- 80,000); Paul Outerbridge with a fresh-to-the-market modernist image, Golf Score Keeper, 1924, (estimate: $40,000-60,000; and Lee Friedlander with vintage prints of Galax, Virginia, 1962, and New York City, 1966, (estimate: each at $30,000-50,000).
