Allan Sekula (geb. 1951, lebt in Los Angeles) ist einer der meist diskutierten Künstler der Gegenwart. Mit Performance under Working Conditions präsentiert die Generali Foundation seine erste Retrospektive in Österreich und zugleich die erste Ausstellung, die Sekulas gegenwärtiges Schaffen mit seinem Frühwerk in Beziehung setzt.   In teils umfangreich angelegten Fotosequenzen widmet sich Sekula politischen und sozialen Themen, die sich konsequent durch sein gesamtes – über dreißigjähriges – Schaffen ziehen und dabei stets auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche Probleme bezogen bleiben. Die Ausstellung richtet ein besonderes Augenmerk auf einen oftmals unterschätzten Aspekt in Sekulas Œuvre: sein Interesse am Theatralischen, das die dokumentarische Seite seiner Arbeit konterkariert und durch eine ironisch humorvolle ergänzt. ____english____ Allan Sekula (born in 1951 and living in Los Angeles) is one of the most widely-discussed artists of the present day. With Performance Under Working Conditions the Generali Foundation presents his first retrospective in Austria and at the same time the first exhibition to set Sekula’s present output in relation to his early work. Sekula, employing at times extensive, conceptual sequences of photographs, has consistently concentrated on political and social themes, with the emphasis on current social problems. The exhibition, in tracing the entire span of his thirty-year career, also focuses particular attention on another, often underestimated aspect of Sekula’s œuvre: his interest in the theatrical, which acts as a counterbalance to the documentary side of his work, and introduces other elements of irony and humor.
