Laureates of the Edward Steichen Award

Exhibition: 16. January – 5 March 2016
Vernissage: Saturday, 16 January, 11am – 2pm

Following the exhibition "Steichen! Making Meaning of a Legacy" at the BOZAR in Brussels in the context of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Galerie Clairefontaine is pleased to present works by three laureates of the Edward Steichen Award.

Inspired by the great tradition of optical theatre, director JEFF DESOM decided to bring several iconic scenes from the history of cinema back to life. From "Twin Peaks" to "Apocalypse Now", from "E.T." to "The Big Lebowski" via "Jason and the Argonauts", Desom has given these famous scenes a third dimension using a clever holographic process based on a semi-transparent screen, mixing the image of an extremely faithfully built model with the characters extracted from the original scene. A new perspective and a great tribute to cinema, accessible to all.

CLAUDIA PASSERI creates site-specific interventions and contextual pieces that explore human perception in relation to their settings. Depending on the site and the context, the work takes on social, political, and environmental aspects. Her research has a neo-romantic aspect that seeks, frequently via the use of irony, to reveal the mechanisms that activate the human creative processes, which transform how we view the world.

SU-MEI TSE uses metaphors and neo-surrealist strategies strengthened by the immediacy and poetry of her materials. She creates associations linking sound to its tangible manifestations, epitomised in the SUMY Headphones. Playful yet poetic, light yet subtle and refined, this delicate and humourous work is an expression of Tse’s profound understanding of the role of sound and rhythm in our everyday lives. Su-Mei Tse was the first Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg laureate in 2005. In 2003 she received the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale for the best national participation.
