Born in 1952 in Frauenfeld (Switzerland) where she still lives and works, Simone Kappeler began taking photographs at the age of 11 year-old. After studying German literature and art history, she attended the Zurich University of the Arts in photography major.

In 1981, she left Switzerland and began a four-month journey through the U.S. driving an old Gran Torino. With the images from this road trip, rediscovered only in 2010, we dive into a world of sensations, a personal representation of what the United States were thirty years ago, influenced by cinema, the work of Robert Franck or William Eggleston.

Since 1970, Simone Kappeler explores all types of photographic techniques using Leica, Diana, Brownie, Polaroid, disposable camera, out-dated or infrared film. Her photographs, both experimental and poetic, reveal a strangely foreign world that surrounds us. Her photographic work, constantly renewed, reveals a strangely foreign world that surrounds us. With an experimental and poetic process, the photographer approaches the near and the distant. She photographs her family, metamorphoses the colours of the Alpine landscapes with infrared film or fixed the fragile beauty of flowers using the x-ray device at her doctor's.

Her work has been regularly exhibited in Europe and gathered in a first monograph "Seile. Fluss. Nacht. Fotografien 1964-2011", published by Hatje Cantz.

Née en 1952 à Frauenfeld (Suisse) où elle vit et travaille, Simone Kappeler commence à prendre des photographies dès l’âge de 11 ans. Après des études en littérature allemande et en histoire de l’art, elle apprend la photographie à la Haute École d’art de Zurich.

En 1981, Simone Kappeler quitte la Suisse pour un voyage de quatre mois à travers les États-Unis au volant d’une vieille Gran Torino. Les photographies de ce road trip, redécouvertes seulement en 2010, nous plongent dans un univers de sensations, une représentation très personnelle du rêve américain, il y a trente ans, dans l’influence du cinéma, de Robert Franck ou de William Eggleston.

Hasselblad, Leica, Diana, Brownie, Polaroid, appareil jetable ou films périmés, Simone Kappeler explore tous types de techniques photographiques depuis 1970. Son œuvre, sans cesse renouvelée, nous révèle le monde curieusement étranger qui nous entoure. Dans une démarche expérimentale et poétique, la photographe aborde le proche comme le lointain.

Elle photographie sa famille, métamorphose les couleurs des paysages alpins grâce à un film sensible aux infrarouges ou fixe la fragile beauté des fleurs sous l’appareil de radioscopie de son voisin médecin.

Son travail, régulièrement exposé en Europe et aux États-Unis a fait l’objet d’une première monographie, "Seile. Fluss. Nacht. Fotografien 1964–2011", édité par Hatje Cantz. Pour cette troisième exposition à la Belle Juliette, Esther Woerdehoff présentera une sélection d’œuvres de cette artiste.
