›Tading Places‹
Rituals of trading places are carnivalesque strategies that maintain cultural, political, racial, economic, and sexual tensions by releasing them temporarily. The switch - one person assuming another's identity - is a reliable comic turn, exploited through the ages by Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Wolfe, and Frank Capra. Each project is built on a simple pretext: Michael Ensminger is disguised as a homeless person; Rafael Goldchain impersonates his ancestors; Noritoshi Hirakawa asks Japanese mothers and daughters to exchange clothes; Annu Palakunnathu Matthew mimes the idiom of Edward S. Curtis portraits.
